Bicycle Wheel Hub Tool

Bicycle Wheel Hub Bearing Tool

Many modern bicycle wheels now use cartridge bearings in the hubs, giving superior performance and longevity compared to cup and cone bearings. However when you need to replace the bearings, you will need a specific tool to press in the new ones. The Burton Bikes tool is perfect for this job, it is carefully designed and precisely engineered to press only the outer bearing race.

Our wheel hub bearing press tool comes with a wide range of different sized plates to choose from, so you can build your own bespoke tool kit to suit the wheels you have. Because of this, it is relatively inexpensive as you only need to buy the parts you need.

The tool contains a 150mm M8 threaded bar, you then add as many bearing press plates as you need. Typically you will require 2, 3, 4 or 6 plates for a wheel set; see our guidance below to help determine what you need. If you choose the Classic tool, it comes with regular hex nuts so you will need to add two 13mm wrenches, or go Pro for our best quality tool with heavy duty handles - no additional tools required.

To determine which bearings you have in your wheels, the only reliable way is to remove the axles and read the markings on each bearing. You may find the front and rear wheels in a wheel set contain the same size bearings, but it is quite likely they are different. You could also have different sizes on the left and right side of the same hub. For example, many Mavic rear wheels have a 608 on the drive side and a different size on the non-drive side. You may also find the bearings in your freehub are different to those in the hubs.
